Competent Crew (Basic) &

Day Skipper (Intermediate)

Certification: Instruct and certify Competent Crew and Day Skipper shore-based and practical courses.

 

Application Prerequisites / 2008

The candidate must have completed International Sail and Power Association, (the Association), Competent Crew, Day Skipper, and Coastal Navigation Certificates, and these certificates must be registered with the Association.



The candidate must have completed the latest Association Competent Crew, Day Skipper, and Coastal Navigation workbooks and chart work, and be in possession of the latest Association logbook.
The candidate is responsible for meeting these prerequisites.



A. Application Procedure:

The Association is responsible for processing candidate applications and registering the candidates. (Application Form)


The candidate is required to;

  1. Complete and meet the prerequisites (see above).
  2. Complete and provide an instructor application form.
  3. Provide a copy of their VHF license.
  4. Provide a resume of their sailing experience.
  5. Provide a copy of their Standard or Marine First Aid certificate including CPR.
  6. Be able to produce, on request, the latest Competent Crew, Day Skipper, and Coastal Navigation workbooks with chart work completed.
  7. Forward to the Board of Directors Instructor Coordinator, 3536 Richmond Rd, Victoria, BC, V8P 4P8 :
    1. their application
    2. their documents listed above
    3. the application fee (processing, registration, clinic materials, etc) of $150.00

On successful processing of the application, the Association will provide a letter of completion to the Candiate Instructor.  The Candidate can then apply for a Revision and Evaluation Clinic with an Associaton School. Clinic dates, locations and organizing bodies will be announced on the Association website.

Each candidate’s file, with a declaration that all prerequisites have been met, will be passed to the Instructor Evaluator (IE) appointed by the Association, prior to the Revision and Evaluation Clinic start date. The candidates’ personal files will remain the sole property of the Association.

B. Revision and Evaluation Clinic:

Held at an Association School by an appointed Instructor Evaluator

Candidates:

  1. Pay a course fee of $600 to the respective Association School

Organizing Association School Requirements:

  1. Prior to the start date of the revision and evaluation clinic, it is the responsibility of the School to verify that the candidate has completed the prerequisites and has received a letter of completion.
  2. Provide classroom and vessel as outlined in the logbook 
  3. Provide the fees for the nominated Instructor Evaluator.

Clinic

  1. Consists of a 3 day classroom and on the water revision and evaluation of practical skills and knowledge of the Competent Crew, Day Skipper, and Coastal Navigation syllabus, emphasizing the Association standards and teaching methods. The supervising IE appointed by the Association will evaluate candidates’ level of knowledge and practical ability, and only those who pass will be eligible to proceed to the Methods of Instruction Clinic.

C. Methods of Instruction Clinic:

Organizing Association School Requirements;

  1. Pay a course fee of $200 to the organizing Association School
  2. Prior to the start date of the Methods of Instruction clinic, it is the responsibility of the organizing body to ensure that the candidate has completed the Revision and Evaluation clinic, and has received a recommendation from the nominated IE to proceed.
  3. Provide classroom and vessel as outlined in the logbook.

Clinic

  1. Consists of a 2 day methods of instruction course including classroom instruction and practical on the water, and a final evaluation of skills and knowledge and final evaluation of instructional ability.

Note:

  1. Once the Prerequisites have been completed candidates failing either the Revision Clinic and Evaluation, or the Methods of Instruction Clinic and Evaluation have a period of 6 months to repeat either of these at their own cost at another clinic. After 6 months have elapsed the candidate is required to re apply to ISPA.
