Coastal Skipper (Advanced)
Certification: Instruct and certify Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Navigation, Coastal Skipper shore-based and practical courses. Application Prerequisites / 2008 The candidate has: - Completed:
- International Sail and Power Association, (the Association), Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Navigation and Coastal Skipper Certificates and these certificates must be registered with the Association (See certificate registration procedure);
- The latest Association Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Navigation and Coastal Skipper workbooks and be in possession of the latest Association logbook; and,
- ISPA Competent Crew, Day Skipper Instructor clinic and is a registered ISPA instructor.
- Instructed:
- A minimum of four ISPA Day Skipper courses.
A. Application Procedure:
The Association is responsible for processing candidate applications and registering the candidates. (Application Form)
The candidate is required to:
- Complete and meet the prerequisites (see above);
- Complete and provide an application form;
- Provide a resume;
- Provide a copy of their VHF operator certificate;
- Provide a copy of their Standard or Marine First Aid certificate including CPR; and,
- Produce the when requested the latest Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Navigation and Coastal Skipper completed workbooks.
- Forward to the Board of Directors Instructor Coordinator, 3536 Richmond Rd, Victoria, BC V8P 4P8:
- their application;
- the documents listed above;
- the application fee (processing, registration, clinic materials, etc.) of $150
On successful completion of the application procedure, the Association will issue the Candidate Instructors with a letter of completion. The candidate can then apply to a Revision and Evaluation Clinic with an Association School. Clinic dates, locations, and organizing bodies will be announced on the Association website. Each candidate’s file, with a declaration that all the prerequisites have been met, will be passed to the Instructor Evaluator appointed by the Association, prior to the start date of the Revision and Evaluation Clinic. B. Revision and Evaluation Clinic:
Held at the revision clinic Association School by an appointed Instructor Evaluator
Cadidate: - Pay a course fee of $600.00 to the respective Association School
Associations School Requirements:
- Prior to the start date of the revision clinic, it is the responsibility of the organizing body to verify the candidate has completed the prerequisites and has received a letter of completion;
- Provide classroom and vessel as outlined in the logbook; and,
- Provide the fees for the nominated Instructor Evaluator.
Clinic: - Consists of a 3 day classroom and afloat revision of knowledge and skills including; ISPA Competent Crew, Day Skipper, with emphasis on Coastal Navigation and Coastal Skipper standards and teaching methods.
- Duration:Minimum 15 hours on the water over 3 days, including a minimum of 4 hours night navigation.
- The supervising Instructor Evaluator appointed by the Association, will evaluate candidates, and only those who pass will be eligible to proceed to the Methods of Instruction Evaluation.
C. Methods of Instruction Clinic:
Held at the revision clinic Association School by an appointed Instructor Evaluator. This is a one day final evaluation/ confirmation of instructional ability. Candidate: - Pay a course fee of $200 to the organizing Association School
- Required to teach a well organized classroom or practical lesson at Coastal Navigation and Coastal Skipper level. The presentations will be evaluated by the Instructor Evaluator, who will make recommendations as to suitability for certification as an Instructor.
Note: Once the Prerequisites have been completed, candidates failing either the Revision Clinic and Evaluation, or the Methods of Instruction Evaluation have a period of 6 months to repeat either of these parts at their own cost at another clinic. After 6 months have elapsed the candidate is required to re apply to ISPA.
